Material Matters Trail

This is the first exhibition collaboration for leading London-based platform Material Matters in Australia.
Material Matters have collaborated with Australia-based Circular Design Thinking at Green Design Show to connect designers, architects, brands and makers with future materials intelligence through a tactile journey.

EcoLattice
EcoLattice: A UK and India research start-up producing 3D-printed lattice foams from recycled thermoplastic elastomers as an alternative to polyurethane foam. It aims to replace traditional PU foams with a zero-waste, fully recyclable and customisable lattice structure for upholstery in automotive, interiors, furniture and healthcare industries - turning a near-unrecyclable everyday material into a circular one.

Low Carbon Industrial
Low Carbon Industrial: A UK maker designing and manufacturing award-winning low-carbon surfaces for interiors and architecture, beginning with the reclaimed-timber terrazzo Foresso in 2016 and now spanning materials such as Elenite, Stelapop made from reclaimed denim, and No-Chip made from manufacturing dust. Its approach is to upgrade existing manufacturing capacity with recycled and organic inputs and to keep materials in closed loops, backed by datasheets, certification and specifier seminars.

Smile Materials
Smile Materials: A UK company turning waste into decorative panels for commercial interiors. Its panels are 100% recyclable with no additives, binders or resin, run on a zero-waste, buy-back model (in Europe), and are independently verified as among the lowest-carbon options on the market, spanning plastics, textile fibres and minerals.

Malai Biomaterials
Malai Biomaterials: A Kerala-based studio making a leather alternative from coconut-industry waste. Malai is a biocomposite of bacterial cellulose grown on waste coconut water plus natural fibres from banana stem, hemp and sisal. The material is plant-based, home-compostable and free from oil-based ingredients.

Durra Panel
Durra Panel: (Ortech Industries, Victoria, AU) — This product was established in the 1950s before sustainability was a term. Made entirely from reclaimed wheat and rice straw. Its dry extrusion process combines heat and pressure, causing the straw to release a natural polymer, lignin, that self-binds the panel core with no added glues or resins. The panel stores more carbon than its manufacturer emits, making it carbon negative, as well as fire-resistant, recyclable and biodegradable.

Desserto
Desserto: A Mexican cactus-based plant material developed as a solution to the impacts of the leather and plastic industries. made from nopal, or prickly pear, cactus that is grown without irrigation and free from toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC. It is used across fashion, furniture and automotive, though it is only partially biodegradable because the finished material contains some polyurethane.

Mineral Fox
Mineral Fox: (Queensland, AU) maker of premium natural wall finishes, with plasters and renders made from lime, clay and gypsum using bio-based additives and recycled materials, aimed at architects, designers and homeowners. Sustainability is central: finishes are low-VOC and biodegradable, and the Circular Sea range is made using recycled shell waste, with an explicit ambition to store carbon in building materials.

Vestra Form Panel
Vestra Form Panel: (Sydney, Melbourne, AU) Textile Recyclers Group is a textile recycler whose mission is to keep apparel and other textiles out of landfill through closed-loop, circular solutions. The Vestra panel is the second product from TRG extending that model into interiors and fitout, turning recovered textile waste into a panel product rather than letting it be downcycled or sent to landfill. TRG also partnered with Deakin University to create pigment for dyes and paint out of textile waste.

Fungi Solutions
Fungi Solutions: (Melbourne, AU) Described as Australia's first commercial myco-material manufacturer, growing mycelium on organic waste such as hemp hurd to create home-compostable alternatives to polystyrene, foam packaging and leather. Its myco-cycling model diverts waste from landfill and sequesters carbon, using roughly 12 per cent of the energy of plastic production with about 90 per cent fewer emissions.

Pit-to-Table
Pit-to-Table: A Cyprus- and London-based company transforming discarded olive pits into pit-board, a range of decorative panels and table tops that cuts organic waste while offering a premium alternative to conventional worktops. Aimed at hospitality, office, residential, retail and exhibition design, the bio-panels come in neutral, dark and light tones and support disassembly-led furniture design, alongside a social mission that fosters inclusion across Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities

Birdmind
Birdmind: A Spanish circular material start-up giving new life to agricultural waste streams, whose RICETAB is a bio-based fibreboard made mainly from rice husk for interior applications such as furniture and wall cladding. It is fire-proofed, water-repellent and antifungal, mechanically recyclable into new products, and is expanding into incorporating textile waste.

Baux
Baux: A Swedish acoustic-materials company making sound-absorbing wall and ceiling panels, with a Wood Wool range of wood wool, cement and water and an Acoustic Pulp panel that is made from Swedish pine and spruce cellulose with wheat bran, potato starch, plant wax and citrus peel. The company positions its panels as recyclable, low-emission and low-waste and also offers a recycled-PET felt.

Myco Works
Myco Works: A US biotech company making Reishi, a premium leather alternative grown with its patented Fine Mycelium technology, with an independently assessed carbon footprint about 94 per cent lower than bovine leather, near-zero plastic and genuine biodegradability. Its brand partners include Hermès, Ligne Roset and General Motors.

Green Loop Global
Green Loop Global: (AU) is a furniture hire company with circular design systems. Two materials developed by the company Grano - pressed from agricultural straw, the stuff that's usually burned off or ploughed back in. Replene is recycled HDPE, made from their own production offcuts.

ResiLoop
ResiLoop: (AU) An industry-led product stewardship scheme, initiated by the Australian Resilient Flooring Association and running independently since 2024, set up to keep resilient flooring out of landfill through a national collection and recovery network. It recovers clean installation offcuts across the three streams, homogeneous, heterogeneous and LVT and passes them to plastic recyclers to be turned into other plastic products, making it an open-loop recovery pathway rather than flooring back into flooring.

Maxiply
Maxiply: (Victoria, AU) architectural plywood manufacturer working with architects and interior designers on wall and ceiling designs, best known for its pre-finished Maxi Panel real-timber plywood alongside its Maxi Colour, Maxi Print and Maxi Perforated ranges, made to order for each project. Its sustainability position rests on local manufacture, a compliance focus and a low-VOC, non-toxic hard-wax oil finish that protects the timber while letting it breathe, with Australian-grown species such as Hoop Pine available for lower-footprint specification.

Future Materials
Future Materials: (Western Australia, AU) A discovery engine showcasing design-led, low-carbon, bio and circular building materials, created to empower designers, champion suppliers and accelerate change. It catalogues hundreds of interior and construction products across acoustics, cladding, flooring, plasters, boards, bricks and leather alternatives, from hempcrete and mycelium tiles to recycled-PET panels, oyster-shell plaster and waste-textile panels, making it a specification-oriented reference for circular material choices.

Bananatex
Bananatex: is a circular, plant-based and plastic-free fabric made from abacá grown in a permaculture setting in the Philippines, developed by Swiss bag brand and material innovator QWSTION with Taiwanese yarn and weaving specialists, and certified to Cradle to Cradle principles. Positioned as durable and scalable rather than a niche alternative, it is designed to reshape textile supply chains across a wide range of applications, with fabric, yarn and sample-box options available to specifiers.

EcoSurfaces
EcoSurfaces: (New South Wales, AU) A manufacturer of Australian-made solid surfaces and benchtops made from 100 per cent recycled Australian glass, with around 450 glass bottles diverted into each Signature Collection benchtop. Its dual position is circular and health-led: the surfaces are scratch, stain and heat resistant, and, unlike quartz-based tops, contain less than 1 per cent crystalline silica, NATA-tested, making them a silicosis-safe alternative for kitchens, splashbacks and outdoor applications.

Crafted Hardwoods
Crafted Hardwoods: (ACT, AU) manufacturer of solid engineered hardwood, using 3RT's world-first robotic and engineering process to convert lower-grade and overlooked timber into characterful hardwood for commercial and residential interiors, furniture, façades and structures. Sustainability is documented rather than claimed, with FSC and PEFC certification, a Declare label and ingredient transparency, a stated carbon footprint and CPD, alongside ReFramed, its lower-carbon timber glazing and framing system now ready for specification.

Hydrowood
Hydrowood: (Tasmania, AU) An Australian supplier of specialty timber, recovering rare hardwoods such as Huon Pine, Blackwood, Myrtle and Sassafras from beneath the hydro lakes at Lake Pieman and milling them into stable, high-performance boards for architecture, interiors, joinery and furniture. Its sustainability position rests on true provenance and fully traceable, responsible recovery of timber that would otherwise stay submerged, backed by PEFC and Responsible Wood Chain of Custody certification and a specifiers' resource hub.

Autex Acoustics
Autex Acoustics: A New Zealand and Australian acoustic manufacturer making sound-absorbing panels, wallcoverings and interior products from polyester with high recycled content, spanning ranges such as Vertiface, Quietspace and the fully circular ReForm. Its sustainability position is well documented and specification-ready, with carbon-neutral operations, alongside genuine closed-loop recovery of its own offcuts and end-of-life product.

The Flooring Co.
The Flooring Co. (Brisbane, Queensland) specialist positioned as Australia's leading supplier of architectural cork for sustainable commercial and residential interiors, working with reputable European manufacturers who prioritise renewable and recycled raw materials and innovative production. Cork is the heart of the range, from the Harvest cork floor collection to the Sobreiro, Da Terra and Corrugated cork wall collections, drawing on the naturally renewable, carbon-storing and rapidly regenerating qualities of harvested cork bark for warm, tactile and low-impact surfaces.

Market Timbers
Market Timbers (Victoria, AU): MD Facade is Amorim's expanded corkboard, supplied in Australia by Melbourne's Market Timbers as a natural, breathable cladding for external facades as well as internal feature walls and ceilings, in 1,000 by 500 by 50 mm tiles. The boards are bound purely by heat and pressure that releases cork's own resin, so there are no glues or toxic chemicals, giving a renewable, carbon-negative and fully recyclable finish with strong thermal and acoustic insulation and a facade lifespan measured in decades.

Portugal Cork Co
Portugal Cork Co: (Victoria, AU) An supplier of premium cork products made from FSC-certified Portuguese cork, imported directly from long-standing producers for eco-friendly, non-toxic commercial and residential interiors. Its design-led range spans cork floor tiles, wall sheets and veneers alongside distinctive finishes such as charcoal, marble-look and three-dimensional wall tiles, drawing on cork's renewable, regenerative bark harvest and its natural thermal and acoustic performance.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB)
Oriented Strand Board (OSB): An engineered wood panel formed by compressing cross-oriented layers of wood strands with wax and synthetic resin, invented in 1963 and now the dominant structural sheathing for walls, floors and roof decking, and increasingly used as an exposed finish in furniture and fitout. It makes efficient use of fast-growing, small-diameter and lower-grade timber, though its formaldehyde-based resins raise VOC and end-of-life concerns, which newer formaldehyde-free isocyanate and OSB/0 boards are beginning to address.
