Interior design is an art form. Our homes, offices and the spaces in which we dwell daily are an opportunity for us to translate what’s happening on the inside to the outside world. One of the most unique and personal ways in which we do this is by selecting art works to adorn our walls.
A passion to provide the Australian interiors market with high quality but accessible art works guides the output of Melbourne-based studio Lynka.Ink, which launched in 2017. The ‘Lynka’ of the eponymous title refers to the artist and designer Lyn Gowin (her friends and family use ‘Lynka’ as an affectionate moniker) while the ‘Ink’ is a reference to the stunning range of art prints that form part of the Lynka.Ink collection.
The inspiration for Lynka.Ink came to Lyn after a decade working extensively in the fashion and textiles industry. She gradually became aware of a gap in the market for quality art works founded on conceptual design and with a beautiful, modern aesthetic, while still being available an accessible price point.
Lyn wanted to offer people a range that would offset the clean lines of their homes and spaces. Lyn’s husband Lawrence Hore has a background in marketing and operations – making a business partnership ideal – and thus Lynka.Ink was born.
The company’s perspective is built on a love of the streamlined and minimalist. As goes the edict from Leonardo da Vinci: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. Simplicity, thoughtfulness and a dedication to quality is evident in every piece which Lynka.Ink produce. As Lyn says:
“Each piece is thoughtfully considered and created with love, and has the capacity to become the transforming element in personal or professional spaces.”
Lyn’s inspirations come from observing ‘the everyday narrative of life’; whether that is the lines of nature, man-made architecture or, as Lyn puts it ‘the unsuspecting moments’ of humanity at work and play. It is an ethos that is reflected in the title of their AW 17 collection ‘A State of Mind’.
The colour palette of the latter is quite monochromatic, with some pieces featuring geometric motifs and a stark, almost industrial feel. Other prints still rely on black and white but have softer brushstrokes and a simple classicism.
Colour is used sparingly but with impact. Examples are a splash of vibrant teal or carefully employed colour blocking against the starkness of the background in the ‘Mosaic’ prints. They are pieces which can complement a room purely through their design but can also be peeled back and contemplated further.
While being affordable, the prints are far from mass produced. Lynka.Ink use only the highest quality materials when producing their prints, combining traditional art methods and digital technology. All of the pieces have a limited production run to increase their value in the market (each print is capped at 100). In addition, each art work is numbered and stamped with the artist’s name, as well as the triangular Lynka.Ink logo.
These statement pieces are produced to archival grade quality, on 100% cotton rag heavyweight matte paper, with limited chemicals employed during production. They also meet the highest industry standards in terms of ink density, image and colour clarity. In short, they have been created with longevity in mind and will stand the test of time.
It is the combination of these different facets of the creative process which create an important point of difference for Lynka.Ink. Their portfolio of works is perfect for large-scale property developers and those creating hospitality spaces, while still holding appeal for interior designers who are looking for a special piece to offset a contemporary, minimalist bedroom or living area.
All of the art works in the collection are available in A3 or A2, with custom sizing available upon request. They can be bought alone or framed – Lynka.Ink use a Melbourne-based framer who produces gallery-standard frames in black, oak and white.
Lynka.Ink will be exhibiting for the first time at the Decor + Design show in Melbourne this July. Lyn and Lawrence are looking forward to the opportunity to showcase their vision and the quality of the prints to interior designers and retailers, in the company of other leading Australian surface artists.
Decor + Design is Australia’s No.1 Interiors Event, with 250+ exhibitors from across the interiors and soft furnishings industry. It takes place at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 20th – 23rd July and includes features such as the International Seminar Series and the VIVID design competition.
