The Vallam series refers to the traditional boat-making technique from my native land Kerala, India. The “”kettu-Vallam”” or the sewn boats are made by stitching light timber using natural fibre such as coir. The Vallam series aims to recontextualise this dying craft to fit into the contemporary time.

Toka Stool by Civilisation

Brent Grayburn
The Toka stool was developed to explore Japanese jointing systems using CAD-CAM manufacturing techniques. The seat surface slides down through the graphic slot in the back of the chair to ‘lock’ the assembly together using simple gravity. Two screws hold the leg structure prior to the seat locking in.

Lignin

Kate Thaus & Nhi Nguyen
The original idea behind ‘Lignin’ was how to use wood unconventionally as a material. Instead of designing with predetermined, machined forms of wood, we wanted to exploit the inherent properties of wood. The challenge was how to accommodate the natural essence of what wood is, and to apply it practically.

Flat Stanley Bench

Sean Brickhill

Tanakorn Pongpaew
The initial concept was influenced by architectural details in fashion, namely the detail in contemporary female fashion and hourglass silhouettes from beautiful garments. This inspiration and research formed a mood board influencing the look and feel of the side table.

Keedo Counter Stool

Liam Starcevich
The Keedo stool serves as a mutation of a design DNA formerly established with a family of non-seating pieces. This lineage is defined by the inward-orientated legs and their blade-like form. It was also to serve as a production piece that is at once desirable and premium, yet highly buildable.

Pan’s Shadow

Brandon Harrison
A dining chair designed for tactile engagement. The open seat allows for free movement and various sitting positions, while fire has been used to enhance texture and invite the user’s touch. The chair’s understructure provides a silent and elegant stance on the ground – much like a shadow.

Veiled Table

Annie Paxton
The ‘Veiled Table’ looks at the ‘performance’ of containment – containing objects, treasures, keepsakes – how we reveal or conceal the possessions in our private lives. Delicate mesh wraps the cabinet, performing as a curtain as it is lifted to permit entry into its belly.

Vestige Table

Annie Paxton
The Vestige pieces, exhibited in MDW2022, are an exploration of texture, form, and process. They ask: how can the process have a voice in the product? Through casting remnants of aluminium, the remnants of production become the core of production, and the process becomes exhibited as the product.

Strength and stability is created through triangulation of the router and hand formed dowel seat with birdsmouth and through tenon joinery.

Bare Chair

Chi Yusuf
The Bare Chair puts the remarkable grain structure of walnut on full display, with a heavy and robust structure that takes after the tree.
