DECOR + DESIGN: As part of our new “Five Minutes With…” series of interviews with Masters of Style, we sat down with Diane Bergeron, an internationally renowned interior designer.
The American tastemaker founded her design practice, Diane Bergeron Design, in 1991. Originally from Massachusetts and NYC, Diane then moved to Melbourne from New York with her Australian partner, and has carved out a strong reputation on Antipodean shores.
Now based in an idyllic location by the seaside in South Australia, over the last two decades Diane’s inimitable style has been sought after both across Australia and internationally. Her American roots are recognisable in the flawless sophistication, cohesion and fluidity she brings to all of her interiors.
Diane’s work includes a mixture of lush residential projects and an exclusive range of furniture in collaboration with Arthur G. The popular range is inspired by Diane’s love of chinoiserie, Palm Beach glamour and classic American style, brought to life by Arthur G’s impeccable workmanship. A new line is scheduled for release in 2019.
The designer also has her own eponymous textile collection, designed to complement the pieces in the Arthur G collection or stand alone in curtains or cushions. The elegant fabrics are made from a premium blend of Belgium linen for strength, and cotton for softness, resilience and structure.
Diane’s work has consistently featured in publications including Architectural Digest, Vogue Living, House and Garden, Living Etc UK, Belle magazine, Inside Out and Home Beautiful.
We asked Diane about some of her inspirations and what piece of furniture best expressed her personality!
How would you define your interior design style?
Classic yet relaxed, I like to layer things from all eras and cultures, humble and grand. I think it’s important that an interior is authentic and not created for effect.
You’ve worked all over the world. Who are your favourite interior designers?
I’m inspired by a lot of great designers, Madeline Castaing, Billy Haines, Sister Parish, but at the moment I’m obsessed with Furlow Gatewood.
What’s the most-read book on your shelf?
“My Favorite Things” by Dorothy F Rodgers
What piece of furniture or homewares would define you?
A Chippendale Fretwork Pagoda cabinet, dishes and table linens collected on my travels.
If you could live in anyone’s house, whose would it be?
Lee Radziwill
You’ll be speaking at the 2019 Decor + Design in July next year. What’s coming up for you before then?
I’m working on a few fantastic residential projects as well as designing a new collection of homewares and an exciting new product collaboration. All to be revealed at D&D 2019!
